BARUG NewsSeptember 2004At August's meeting I gave a presentation to those attending on the use of a few freely available programs which could be used to keep a collection of digital photos under control. I demonstrated these on a PC laptop running Virtual RPC, which is where my own digital photos usually end up. The programs were:
!ThumbCat, by Malcolm Ripley: a program to take a directory of photos and convert them into a
catalogue of thumbnail phots for quick review purposes.
!webgen2, by Dave Stratford: a program to produce an HTML catalogue of digital photos. The
first page contains small thumbnails, clicking on one of which brings up a larger thumbnail.
Navigation between photos and back to the home page can be done very easily. See
!EXIFinfo, by Chris Terran: a program to examine the non-graphic info added to JPEG images by
most modern digital cameras. This information can be useful if you want to record how/when the
photo was taken, and some PC programs make use of it. No RISC OS ones do... :-(
!Jclean, by David Barrow: allows JPEGs to be 'trimmed' of data such as the EXIF data so that
JPEGs which won't launch into RISC OS applications can subsequently do so.
Thanks to all the above freeware authors for their programs, which I hope other BARUG members will also find useful. On the day of next month's meeting I shall be 'somewhere in New Hampshire' on holiday, and the chair will be taken by Jack or Tony. Paul Middleton, MD of RISCOS Ltd is to be the guest speaker, and we understand that there is due to be published in mid-September a form of 'road map' showing how the recent agreement between Castle and RISCOS Ltd will be pulled through in practice. I'm sure there will be the usual lively debate about what the right direction is/should be, and shall be sorry to miss it. Usual place and time - be there!
There is to be a South East Show again this year, in the same Guildford venue as last year, on
Saturday 23 October. See for more details:
