BARUG NewsOctober 2005Thanks to Tony for writing last month's newsletter in my absence overseas. We were pleased to welcome at September's meeting Jack Lillingston, MD of Castle, who brought examples of the various models in the Iyonix range and who demonstrated their construction, features and capabilities to a small group of members. Jack also shared his views on the RISC OS market and on recent developments in hardware and software. Despite various predictions of the imminent death of the market, Jack made it clear he doesn't share those views. Without revealing details he gave an outline of how sales of RISC OS products to industrial users are helping Castle to develop areas which may one day be fed back into the desktop market. I'm afraid that after his long drive down to Bristol and at the end of his excellent presentation, Jack was rewarded with a major downpour in which to load his car and head back down the motorway. We are very grateful for your visit, Jack, and hope that your very wet drive home wasn't too traumatic! The South East Show is being held in the same Guildford venue as for the past couple of years this coming weekend. Similar in size to the South West Show, it would appear to be your last chance for a show in 2005 because there doesn't seem to be a Midlands Show this year. There will be a new version of !ArtWorks from Martin Wuerthner with direct PDF export in it for the first time, giving users the chance to export ArtWorks graphics in a form any user on any platform can display. Martin has also been working on new EasiWriter/TechWriter functionality, though this may not be complete in time for sale at the Show. See Martin's ArtWorks site at and the EasiWriter/TechWriter site at http://www.icontechnology.co.uk/
All the usual http://www.drobe.co.uk/riscos/artifact1471.html The next BARUG meeting will be at the usual time and place on Wednesday 26th October. As we do not have a guest speaker and no-one has offered a home-grown topic this month, I propose to have a discussion centred on how members have solved that apparently permanent bane of our email lives - Spam! So if you have successfully used one of the various spam-reducing programmes available for RISC OS, come and tell the rest of us how you did it and what you had to do to make it effective..... See you then Steve |
