BARUG News
November 2003
October's guest speaker was David Snell, who demonstrated his new RISC OS program !WebWonder, a website authoring program which does not require much a priori knowledge of HTML. David's expert demonstration of his program, which to judge by the number of sales he made at the end of the evening, was very well received by those present. Very many thanks, David, for making the trip from Exeter through the heavy traffic on that day! Next month's meeting is on the 26th November, when the guest speaker will be Paul Middleton of RISCOS Ltd. Paul will be demonstrating the new ROM version of RISC OS 4.39 and will be speaking on other topics such as the plans for future "Select" developments. In the past he has been willing to discuss other RISC OS matters where these have not been the subject of NDAs. His previous talks have always sparked lively debates - I'm sure this one will be no exception! I've been having difficulty in sending out the Newsletter for the last 2 months, so many apologies to anyone who has not been contacted. I think I've found the reason - a particular setting required in my ISP set-up had been put back to the default setting. I attach again the Membership application drawfile - for those who weren't at either September or October meetings, please ensure that your renewal is sent on to the Treasurer, Graham Stewart, as soon as possible. RiscStation has finally given up on trying to produce a native RISC OS portable and is now marketing a range of PC laptops with Virtual RPC-SE as an alternative. Their website hasn't been updated at the time of writing, but there has been some discussion on the Drobe portal, where a description of the laptops on offer can be found: http://www.drobe.co.uk/riscos/artifact866.html Still nothing from MicroDigital about the Omega, and no sign of mine: Steffan Huber has published a comparison of the Omega and the Iyonix which can be found at: http://www.huber-net.de/iyonixvsomega/index_e.htm Unfortunately for non-linguists, the article is in the German language - but running it through one of the free translations on the Web could be interesting. It compares an X-scale Iyonix with a StrongARM Omega, so the comparison was always likely to favour the former. However, no-one has yet reported receiving an X-scale Omega, so at the moment the comparison is all that can be had!
See you soon!
