Last Month's Meeting...Those who attended the October meeting were privileged to listen to a fascinating presentation by Dr Nat Queen, of the University of Birmingham, on the subject of encryption and how to apply it to protect the privacy of your emails. Nat Queen outlined the theory behind public key encryption and then went on to describe and demonstrate various programs, some of them his own, which allow easy encryption of emails and greatly improve the chances of retaining privacy. Thank you for your insights, Nat!
This Month's Meeting...The November meeting will take place at the usual venue and at the usual time of 1930, on Wednesday 27 November. This month our speaker will be Paul Richardson of ExPlan, who will bring us up to date with developments in his SOLO project and anything else in which he is involved. Members will recall earlier talks by Paul which included demonstrations of printers and flat screen monitors, as well as mains power protection devices. For an advance look at what Paul's company has to offer, see the website:
Other News...The Risc OS South East Show Nov '02, took place in Guildford: the Chairman reports... "Brief personal impressions - given the more formal reports on the show and on Iyonix that will emerge - of a bustling venue: a interesting selection of stands, many punters ( a hopeful sign ) but limited room to move around easily. Two presentations on IYONIX - the first overcrowded with some 70 sitting and as many again standing. An amazing array of video equipment to support presentations and offer close-ups. Constructive recognition that RISCOS 4.x and 5.x will coexist on the variety of machines that will be in use in coming years. Useful technical detail on USB from Simtec. Several members recognised among the crowd and in the peace and quiet of the cafeteria. A worthwhile and well advertised event by the Surrey and Sussex Group. " The next RISC OS Show will be the ARM Club Midlands Show on Saturday 30 November, in the National Motorcycle Museum near Birmingham, close to the NEC. Perhaps this time visitors will see some of the new machines being 'hyped' at the moment... :-) http://www.armclub.org.uk/shows The December meeting will be held this year on Wednesday 18 December and NOT the final Wednesday of the month. The meeting will be an opportunity for self-help, problem solving and anything else members wish to talk about. Hopefully, the traditional mince pies will be in evidence. In January the meeting reverts to the usual date: the guest speaker will be Paul Middleton of RISCOS Ltd, discussing the 'Select' scheme and what is to follow on from that development work. February's meeting will include the AGM: more details next month Hot news tonight for fans of ArtWorks: Martin Wuerthner, of ArtWorks module development fame, has secured the rights to the whole program. In his most recent newsletter Martin writes: "This means that from now on, MW Software will be able to release completely new versions of ArtWorks as opposed to plug-in modules and patches only. This new situation will allow much more comprehensive updates to ArtWorks than previously possible. It is our firm intention to make 32-bit versions of ArtWorks and related software available." No doubt further details will soon be available from Martin's website: Those RISC PC owners thinking of buying a USB podule might wish to look at Stuart Tyrrell's website: on which he shows a special offer of a free USB hub to go with the podule, for orders placed before the end of November. See you next week! Steve |
