BARUG NEWSLETTER, MARCH 2004

The February meeting was cancelled and members were encouraged to go to the South West Show instead. Unfortunately, I was overseas on business that week and couldn't go - so I'll look forward to hearing about the Show first-hand at next week's meeting!

March's meeting will be held on Wednesday 31 March at the usual time and place. The topic this month will be a talk by the Vice Chairman on 'wireless networking'. He will demonstrate how to link PCs and RISC PCs together with wireless components, so that advantage can be taken of the good points of both operating systems and of modern devices which are not catered for on RISC OS machines. My own experience was that setting up a wireless network wasn't straightforward - come and judge for yourselves!

I got no takers last time, so agin: I have come into possession of a number of monitors, ranging from an AFK18 (A5000) through AFK50 to AFK60. All of these are 14" monitors and all were said to be working when last used. Anyone who would like one of them as a spare or replacement should contact me - email address on the website. These are free: any not taken by our members will end up on a charity stall at a future Show.

I shall probably also bring some of the older equipment which I have been given for disposal to sympathetic homes. This is from the BBC to A3000 era. The problem I have is that I didn't use any of these machines, so I have no idea what I have, nor whether or not it is likely to be of use to anyone. Anyone with knowledge is welcome to help me out. Any of the equipment is free to BARUG members.

When I ordered my own set of RISC OS 4.39 ROMs from Paul Middleton about 2 weeks ago, he advised that about 130 sets of the 150 production run had been taken. Any member wishing to upgrade to the latest OS version in ROM is advised to hurry, lest there be no second production run! Version 4.39 seems to be called RISC OS Adjust, to distinguish it from the soft-loaded Select version. A full list of changes can be found at:

More good news for fans of Icon Technology's EasiWriter/TechWriter family of DTP programs: following the death of the programmer, Bob Pollard, there has been little development activity, but this is now due to change as Martin Wuerthner has become involved. Anyone who uses ArtWorks will now of Martin's impeccable programming credentials, so for him to become involved with Icon is a very positive move. (This newsletter is produced in EasiWriter, as it has a HTML export facility which is entirely adequate for the purpose.)

See you next week!
