March 2003

Apologies to those who may not have got a newsletter for the past 2 months. I had a problem with my ISP which appears to have changed the functions of one of their servers without telling anyone. The effect was to appear to accept my outgoing email with the newsletter attached, but not to deliver it on from there...

If you are reading this from an email, I've obviously got the problem sorted!

Last Meeting

The guest speaker at the February meeting was Paul Middleton, MD of RISCOS Ltd. Paul demonstrated some of the features of the new, third issue of the 'Select' development of RISC OS 4. He had lots to say about the state of the RISC OS market and the future of desktop computing in general. Having agreed with Paul that the talk should end at 8-45 to allow us to hold the AGM, it became obvious that members were much more interested in what Paul had to say than in the formalities of an AGM! So the AGM was postponed by popular request - more below. Thanks very much to Pal for making the trip and for his information and candour in his talk.

The AGM

The AGM will now take place at the April meeting, when we do not have a guest speaker. I have distributed nomination papers for Committee places on a previous emailing, and paper copies at the last meeting, so if you haven't already let me have yours back, please keep them safe and don't forget to bring them to the April meeting. Previously completed nomination forms help to keep the AGM short!

This Meeting

The guest speaker this month is Jack Lillingston, MD of Castle Technology Ltd, who will be presenting the Iyonix and answering questions about it. Jack Evans comments "...don't miss this opportunity to learn more about this great machine - I wouldn't be without mine. Bring your chequebooks - I have it on good authority that there may be some to take away." Jack is very pleased with his machine, which of course is the only 32-bit RISC OS machine currently available, the Omega still not having put in an appearance. Come and see it for yourself on the 26th: an informative evening of lively discussion can be expected!

The RISC OS South West Show was held on Saturday, 22nd February at the usual location of the Webbington Hotel. Various BARUG members helped out with the cash till and with helping John Stonier to run the show. There was a reasonable attendance and a lot of sales were being made. The Iyonix was there, and also various Omega machines - alas, none for sale as yet. But at least we now know that the Omega does exist, despite rumours to the contrary on the newsgroups!

See you soon
