July 2004

I regret to inform fellow members of the death at the end of 2003 of our colleague David Summers, who lost his fight against cancer. I have only recently become aware of his passing. David supported BARUG for many years, and during 2003 gave us a talk one evening on the use of !ProCAD to design a garden patio and estimate the materials required from the accurate layout sketch. Our sympathies go to his family.

July's meeting will be held on Wednesday 28 July at the usual time and place. The guest speaker this month is to be Paul Vigay. Paul will announce his topic on the evening. It's some time since his last visit, but in that time Paul has continued to promote RISC OS and to keep his excellent software programmes up to date. We look forward to his return.

Thanks again to last month's guest speaker, David Ruck. David demonstrated some of the photographs from his recent trip 'down under' and showed how flaws could be removed and photos joined to make panoramas using !Photodesk. David was responsible for the 32 bit compatible version of !Photodesk used on Iyonix machines today. David's talk was very well received, and we are grateful to him for making the journey to see us - even if aided by his PDA GPS device, demonstrated to a few of us after the meeting had closed!

The RISOS Ltd vs Castle issue has not been resolved at the time of writing. More serious is the effect on some of the smaller dealers, such as Virtual Acorn and STD. The latter has announced a week's closure of business whilst the company takes stock of the situation. We cannot afford to lose some of the few remaining RISC OS dealers and programmers such as Stuart Tyrrell and Aaron Timbrell: let us hope that some resolution will be forthcoming. I had a problem with my copy of Virtual RPC recently and the over-the-phone service given by Aaron was superb. Within minutes he had determined the problem and I was able to recover the program to normal operation. Thanks, Aaron!

Members are reminded that the annual subscription of £7 is now due. A drawfile membership application is attached below. Please print out and complete, and either bring it to the July meeting or send it to the Treasurer at the address given. It's vital that you keep Graham informed of changes of address details, and both Graham and myself of email changes. So if you've changed your email and not told me, you won't be reading this newsletter... :-))

Finally, there being half the membership present at the June meeting, it was proposed that there should be no meeting held in August. Many members will be on holiday then, and guest speakers are even harder to find that month. There was unanimous agreement that we should not meet in August: therefore, this is formal notification that there will be no BARUG meeting in August. Meetings will resume in September, with the Vice-Chairman presiding in my absence in North America.

See you at the July meeting!
