January 2006

The December meeting, held a few days before Christmas, saw off a fair few mince pies and cups of coffee, accompanied by the usual quote of gossip, gripes and seasonal optimism!

January's meeting will be held at the usual place and time on Wednesday 25th January.

Chris Hall will be speaking on the subject of web site design. He will explain how to get started if you want to produce your own web site - simple text and pictures on a web page using HTML and a text editor or something like !HTMLEdit. An example of this is at:

http://www.home-in-bristol.fsnet.co.uk/SigEng.htm

Chris will also explain the mystery of cascading style sheets (the Acorn platform does not support these well), the use of Javascript to read and amend the parameters on an HTML page and the use of a CGI script to generate the web page, rather than just having it as a static text file. If you want some ideas on what can be done, then look at

to see drop down menus, or look at

to see a 'virtual earth' map of Winchester (this page requires Internet Explorer).

To see a 'virtual' page - one that is created from a script - try

The RISC OS South West Show 2006 is to be held at the Webbington Hotel again, this year on Saturday 18th February. The organiser, John Stonier, has asked BARUG members to assist in the running of the Show. He was very grateful for the help he received last year and hopes to get a similar level of support this year. John asks for some help on the Friday evening to set up some of the stands, and for help from 08.00 throughout the day on the Saturday itself.

This is our chance to 'make a difference' in the RISC OS world: if the Show is less than successful for the dealers and exhibitors, it may not be run again, and then the RISC OS world would be down to just two shows a year....

As last year, the Committee has agreed that there will not be a February meeting and that 'attending the Show' should be considered as the February meeting. Please do your best to attend, and please give some time to assist in the running of the Show - even an hour would be helpful to John Stonier!

With best wishes for the New Year to you all!
