February 2004

The guest speaker at the January meeting was Paul Middleton, MD of RISCOS Ltd. Unfortunately, the evening in question was the start of the recent cold snap and many of the roads in the Bristol area were covered in snow or ice. Regrettably, rather fewer members than usual were able to make the meeting. Paul demonstrated the version of Select embedded in ROM, and gave us his usual interesting and challenging view of the RISC OS market. Thank you for making the trip to visit us, Paul, especially under the weather conditions on that particular night. We do appreciate your insights!

Members will recall that I suggested that the February meeting be cancelled and the forthcoming South West Show should be taken as the BARUG meeting for that month. Amongst those present in January happened to be the entire committee. I had hoped to canvas more members before making the final decision, but was forced to make do with the few present, all of whom were in favour of the suggestion. This is therefore formal notice that the February meeting is cancelled. The next meeting will be on March 31st at the usual time and place.

We don't have a guest speaker for March - anyone willing to give a presentation on a pet subject is very welcome. Please contact me to discuss.

The SW Show will again be held at the Webbington Hotel, this year on Saturday 28 February. Details from:

BARUG members are urged to support the Show, and in particular give an hour or two to help the organiser, John Stonier, to help run the Show.

I have come into possession of a number of monitors, ranging from an AFK18 (A5000) through AFK50 to AFK60. All of these are 14" monitors and all were said to be working when last used. Anyone who would like one of them as a spare or replacement should contact me - email address on the website. These are free: any not taken by our members will end up on a charity stall at a future Show.

Martin Wuerthner's GimpPrint project has borne fruit: those who pledged donations are now able to download the new program from his website (it's password protected). I have done so, but unfortunately cannot test it as yet: my study is still packed up after new carpet has been fitted, and I cannot yet get access to my inkjet printer. However, Jack adviss that he has also been using the new program, so ask him about it if you are interested.

Anyone in the Bristol are who can have access to Telewest cable will be glad to hear that it works well with RISC OS. My installation was made at the end of January and brings the cable into a wireless router, to which my RPC is hard-wired. With the router as the registered address, the cable connection doen't care what machines you are running. I can't believe how much faster downloads are, and wouldn't want to go back to a standard modem again!

Drobe reports that Omega machines are shipping, albeit with some functionality not yet working. I'll wait with interest to see what I am offered and keep you posted!

I shan't be at the SW Show due to overseas travel: see you at the end of March!
