December 2004

We were most fortunate to be entertained at the November meeting by a bright young star of RISC OS programming, John-Mark Bell. John-Mark lucidly described the work he and others are doing to produce !NetSurf, an open-source web browser, which has made spectacular progress during 2004 and now is widely used by many RISC OS users to complement the more established browsers, such as !Oregano2 and !Fresco. He demonstrated the programme and discussed with questioners the progress and future plans for the programme. All such progress is made in the free time of those responsible, to whom all RISC OS users owe a great debt for their efforts. John-Mark, who is still a student at Southampton University, is clearly a very talented gentleman and we thank him warmly for taking the trouble to come and present his work to us.

The December meeting will be held on Wednesday 15th December, at the usual place and time. This is a week earlier than usual but the Centre's staff are having their own Xmas party the following week, so we have no choice in the matter! As usual, mince pies and coffee will be available. Come and celebrate the end of another year with your colleagues!

The Acorn Midlands Show was held on the 4th December at the National Motorcycle Museum. Drobe reports that the Show was rather quiet:

Any BARUG member who did attend the Show is welcome to comment at the forthcoming meeting to those of us who didn't/couldn't attend the Show. The next Show will be the South West Show, to be held on Saturday 26 February 2005. See

BARUG members assistance will be welcome: this year I have still got a pile of old computers and accessories to pass on, so expect to use the BARUG table to complement the official Charity Stall, which probably wouldn't want to take the hardware itself.

Hope to see you at the December meeting!
