Our last, and possibly final, update was 1st June 2006.

The Bristol Area Risc User Group was a group for all users of the RISC OS operating system living within reach of North Bristol.

The members were from the whole spectrum of Risc OS users, from novices to software and hardware developers.

Demise of BARUG, May 2006...

BARUG is no more. At an EGM on 31st May 2006 the membership voted to wind up the club after an existence which has spanned some 17 years.

When it started the Acorn computer scene was lively, software and hardware development was rapid and Acorn appeared to have a bright future.

For reasons well documented elsewhere this future was not to be and, with the demise of Acorn itself, users were left in a situation of dwindling interest and the loss of many of the developers on whom the platform relied.

This has led to the ups-and-downs to which we have been accustomed in the last years which, in turn, have done little to maintain a positive attitude amongst the RISC OS-using populace.

More and more people have drifted away from the platform to the point where BARUG now finds it impossible to justify its continued existence.

BARUG's demise, however, does not represent the demise of the RISC OS platform nor of the membership's enthusiasm for the platform. Rather, they feel that what BARUG was formed to do, share information and help users with problems, is now largely more conveniently done elsewhere.

The RISC OS scene itself is far from dead and buried. There have been new computers produced since Acorn left us and even newer systems are still under development. Software is still under development and new and exciting things still happen.

So our thanks go to all those who contributed to BARUG's success over the years and good luck to RISC OS itself.

Now it's time to move on...Good luck and goodbye.
